A man who helped bring two Scotch distilleries back to life has been given one of the highest accolades in Scotch whisky by being named a \u2018Keeper of the Quaich\u2019.<\/p>\n

Stewart Buchanan, brother of the wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan, is well-known in the Scotch industry for his role in resurrecting BenRiach distillery in 2004 after production had halted at the historic Speyside distillery. Stewart was so dedicated that he slept on the floor of BenRiach’s maltings while he worked to strip down and rebuild every piece of equipment to prepare it for production.<\/p>\n

Only a small number of people are nominated as \u2018Keepers of the Quaich\u2019 for showing extraordinary dedication to and passion for Scotch.<\/p>\n

Stewart now puts his intimate knowledge of production to good use by travelling the world holding whisky tastings and educating consumers about Brown-Forman\u2019s three award winning Single Malt Scotch whisky brands; The GlenDronach, BenRiach and Glenglassaugh as Global Brand Ambassador. The global drinks company renowned for its whiskey and now whisky brands, bought the three distilleries in 2016. Scotch whisky is going through a major boom, with overseas sales reaching \u00a34.36bn last year. *<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to be invited to be a member of the Quaich,\u201d said 47 year old Stewart. \u201cTo see my work earning rewards and being recognised alongside other Keepers of the Quaich who are stars in the industry in their own right, is a real honour.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Stewart was born in Dumbarton, just outside Glasgow, but grew up on the Isle of Mull, where he and his brother Gordon developed a sense of adventure.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe it\u2019s because we were always encouraged to be outdoors so I was always out on boats or camping out, or maybe it\u2019s because growing up on an island like Mull, you learn that there\u2019s no such thing as a nine-to-five job,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cI developed a taste for adventure and I\u2019ve been able to combine that with a passion for whisky.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBringing BenRiach back to life again, and Glenglassaugh too as it became commercially operational, is a professional highlight. Also, seeing more and more people from every corner of the globe appreciate the whisky. It was locked away in the distillery and now, after 20 years, I\u2019m able to see it being enjoyed across the world. That\u2019s rewarding for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are 155 distilleries in Scotland and I\u2019m lucky enough to represent three of them and travel the world. I wake up smiling every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
